By and For - Women of colour
We are a theatre company ran by and for women of colour. Unapologetically.
Why Anansi Theatre Exists
We exist to create inclusive creative spaces and support the wellbeing of women of colour across all areas of the arts—on stage, behind the scenes, and in our audiences. By centering their voices, we aim to improve mental health, foster community, and empower women of colour to thrive, using the arts as a vehicle for meaningful change.
What does “By and For” mean?
For us, “by and for women of colour” means ensuring that women of colour are at the heart of every aspect of our work. This guiding principle shapes not only our productions and performances but also how we create, collaborate, and lead. Through this approach, we establish spaces where cultural narratives are celebrated, leadership is inclusive, and the creative sector becomes a place where everyone feels seen, valued, and connected.
Why this work is crucial?
We recognise that there needs to be a change in leadership to make the arts sector a truly welcoming place for women of colour. In the Arts Council’s report on Ethnicity Representation by Job Level (2020-21), covering all paid staff in National Portfolio Organisations, only 9% of managers identified as Black, Asian, or from other ethnically diverse backgrounds. This disparity highlights the need for spaces and opportunities that specifically support women of colour.
The change we’re working towards
We’re building a creative community where women of colour can thrive by focusing on:
Empowerment: Providing a platform for voices that have historically been overlooked.
Safety: Creating spaces where individuals feel secure and respected.
Bravery: Encouraging creative expression without fear of judgment.
Celebration: Honouring diverse stories, cultures, and experiences.
Joy: Fostering an environment where creativity and connection are sources of happiness.
Shared Experience: Building community through collective storytelling and understanding.
By prioritising these values, we offer opportunity and belonging to those who have often felt isolated or excluded in the arts.
Our Commitments
Anansi Theatre is dedicated to:
Paying women of colour their worth and addressing disparities in racial and gender pay.
Offering support, refuge, and open conversations around mental health, recognising its impact on our community and culture.
Using movement and storytelling to share our stories and experiences.
Creating theatre that centers on women of colour and honours the history and legacy of our ancestors.
